Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Wilton 2105-5038 Giant Cupcake PanCustomer Review: How Could You Not Love This Pan!!? Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this pan for our twins' First Birthday party. I made a pink one for her and a blue one for him!! I first tried the recipe that came with the pan - the chocolate pound cake - and wasn't happy with the texture or flavor. Then I tried a recipe in my collection which added hot fudge, chocolate milk and chocolate chips to a box mix. Followed everyone's suggestions (thank you!!) to fill the bottom portion and bake it for 12 min first, then greased the top portion, filled it and back into the oven. My total bake time was 65 minutes and it came out great!! To decorate, I made a little well in the bottom portion to fill with icing, since the outside wouldn't have any, then, with a thin layer of buttercream on the bottom, I covered it with a sheet of colored fondant. I used my bench scraper to make indentations in the grooves around it to mimic a creased cupcake paper. Then i put the top layer on and swirled on my tinted buttercream. I used the Wilton giant confetti for the sprinkles. For the "one candle", I made two giant number "1"s out of pastillage (sugar dough) to put on each cupcake. (and used the Wilton icing colors to paint them.... I was able to make these weeks in advance!)
They turned out great and they match the party invitations perfectly! I would definitely recommend this pan to anyone who loves to be creative and likes to make a statement!! There's so much you can do with it! Have fun!!
And don't worry about the pan not coming with directions - there's so much info on the internet anyway - who doesn't come here for advice before creating a masterpiece? : )
Customer Review: BEST PAN EVER! Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, sorry people who gave bad reviews..your on CRACK! This pan ROCKS!! I used the baker joy flour/oil spray and cake fell out of pan by itself. Was a bit overdone on one side but I saw later that some people cooked one side first for a while then the other. I'll probably cook the first side 5 or 10 min then fill the smaller side. Cake came out perfectly otherwise. You have to trim the ops to get a flat surface to connect the 2 pieces but even my 'normal' cakes dome so I always cut the tops to make them flat, not biggie. The best thing i can say for you is to try this recipe. I didnt want to use a 'normal' box cake because i had to transport this cake and I thought it would be too soft to stand being juggled. I didnt want to make a pound cake from scratch either. I settled on this, and you can do it with any boxed cake flavor. It makes a denser cake than a normal box but not QUITE a pound cake density either. Just right for transporting and very tasty! Hope you like the giant cupcake pan as much as I do! I used a regular cake mix, which produced six cups of batter. I poured 3 1/2 cups of batter in the "bottom" portion of the mold, and 2 cups of batter in the "top" of the cupcake.
When I use a cake mix, I use the mix with 1/3 cup softened butter, 1 cup of milk and 4 eggs.
This produces a fine, moist crumb texture, much like a pound cake. And I found this produces a better cake for this pan than following the usual ingredients called for on the back of the cake mix box.
Customer Review: Very fun cake mold! Summary: 5 Stars
I used this giant cupcake mold for my son's first birthday cake. It was really fun to make and decorate, and turned out great! I just used a store-bought cake mix (chocolate) and the cake itself turned out fine. Although the top of the cupcake does cook faster than the bottom, it's not so much faster that there was any noticeable dryness in the texture. I filled the top portion 3/4 full and the bottom 1/2 full with batter. The one downside to the pan is that the center of each portion really balloons up with steam during cooking, so to put it together, you will have to even off each part by cutting some off. On the bright side, you'll get a little snack out of it!
For decoration, I made a large batch of cream-cheese frosting and colored 1/3 green, 1/3 blue, and left 1/3 white. I piped on the green and white, alternating, on the bottom half. This made it look like a paper cupcake pan liner. I piped the blue frosting on the top in a giant swirl. I used Necco wafers to decorate the top, like giant sprinkles. Mike and Ike's would also be good here, like giant jimmies. Final touch--a large size candle to keep with the proportions. (see the customer images for the final result!)
Everyone was really impressed with the cake and one person even asked where I'd bought it! I would definitely make this cake for other kids' events, or for friends who love cupcakes. Very fun!
Customer Review: I love this pan and it's SOOO easy to decorate the finished cake! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this pan for at least a year now and I just used it for the first time a few days ago. I used a Duncan Hines Yellow Cake Mix and followed the directions for the bundt pan on the back of the box. I noticed that my cake was browning a little more than I prefer on top about 10 minutes before time to remove it, so I layed a large sheet of aluminum foil over the top to keep it from browning any more but the cake would get cooked all the way through. I always do this if I am cooking a bundt cake, if I notice the top is browning but the cake is still raw in the middle. I use the toothpick trick to determine when the cake is done, but I'm sure that's common practice.
I just used a can of Duncan Hines French Vanilla Frosting on top and I loved decorating this cupcake. It was so easy! I mean, really easy. I used the Wilton Tip 1M and some of the confetti sprinkles and it was gorgeous. I didn't bother doing anything to the bottom. It was pretty enough as it was. I didn't want to mess up a good thing, lol. I will add a photo after I get them downloaded to my computer. I can't wait to make another one of these things. I may just whip one up tomorrow. It's just so easy and equally impressive to others. People will think you worked on it forever! I strongly recommend this pan to professionals and beginners alike. You can't go wrong.
Customer Review: Fun, Versatile, and Easy pan Summary: 5 Stars
I was debating purchasing the cheaper flexible pan, but after reading many reviews I chose this one. I am so glad I did! This is a wonderful pan.
I took tips from many of the reviews I read and came up with a system that has baked perfectly every time. I grease the pan, instead of using a cooking spray (which is what I generally use, but wanted to make sure this came out nicely). I use one store bought cake mix and put most of the batter in the bottom (of course). When both sides are filled, even though the lid has much less batter, it looks fuller and is at a higher level than the bottom because it is shallow and pointy.
When it comes to baking, it is very simple. I use the timing on the cake box under the bundt directions (somewhere around 42 minutes). I put both sides in at the same time, but 15 minutes into cooking I put tinfoil over the top of the lid for the remainder of the cooking time. I let it cool down quite a bit before taking it out of the pan and have never had it stick or break. It comes out perfect everytime!
