It's definitely worth purchasing a Wilton candy thermometer versus the ones found in grocery stores which have the paper inside and the round cap on top. They always leak water into them when washed and if you have to soak them because of hard candy - they never work again.
My last Wilton thermometer was dropped and broken a couple years ago, but it had lasted almost 20 years. This is well worth the investment.
